Under Eye CirclesOne of the most asked questions on my blog is about dark circles.  So many women are dealing with darkness under the eyes.   I decided to do some research because I honestly didn’t have the answers.  Telling people to get more sleep and drink more water is getting old-it’s valid but I have found there are many more factors that could be contributing. Under eye darkness is not one of my issues so I’m not offering advice from experience. This post is based on research.  t took a lot of digging but I believe I’ve found some explanations and remedies for this pesky issue!! (that don’t include a good concealer!)

Common causes of dark under-eye circles

  • Allergies
  • Vitamin Deficiency (B-12, D, E, K)
  • Lack of sleep
  • Heredity
  • Liver Issues
  • Aging-Thinner skin and less collagen

I was so intrigued to find that under eye circles are often a result of a vitamin deficiency or even a weak liver.  As always, skin issues have their root inside the body.  Addressing these 2 issues could go a long way in reducing darkness under the eye.  What you eat is so very important.  Skin issues always reflect a deeper issue originating within the body.

Vitamin K for Dark Under Eye Circles:

Over and over I’ve been reading that Vitamin K is often used to help reduce under eye circles as well as broken capillaries.

Studies have shown it can be very effective.  Vitamin K is essential for blood coagulating and clotting.  It also good for digestion-(2 birds with 1 stone?!)

When eating Vitamin K rich foods or taking a supplement, vitamin K can help detox the liver.   Foods rich in vitamin K include kale, spinach, basil, brussel sprouts, chili powder and scallions.  I found THIS supplement that I am ordering because capillaries run in my family and I already have a couple on my cheek.

There is also a vitamin K oil-convenient for us DIYers, huh!?

Arnica Oil for Dark Under Eye Circles:

Upon further research I found that Arnica oil is another topical remedy.

Turns out arnica oil is popular when treating bruising and joint pain.  Because under eye circles are very similar to bruising, arnica could be very effective.

When you buy “arnica oil”, it is typically an oil that has been infused with arnica flowers. I was able to find that there is an arnica essential oil as well. Find arnica oil HERE.  I found THIS arnica essential oil.

I also located dried arnica which could be infused into an oil

A Few DIYs to Reduce Under Eyes:

A few more natural remedies for reducing dark under eye circles…

  • Cucumber slices over eyes or my Cucumber eye mask recipe works great!
  • Potato slices over eyes.
  • Tea bags over eyes (caffeine helps!). Check out my Green Tea Ice Cubes.
  • Apply Vitamin E under eyes.
  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Drink more water.
  • Apply ice in the a.m. to constrict blood vessels. Learn more about ice therapy HERE.
  • Elevate head with 2 pillows while sleeping.
  • Gua Sha

This is a quickie post but I will be formulating a roll-on that could be very helpful for reducing dark circles!  It will be an easy one but I need to do a bit more research on proportions and ingredients since this won’t be one I’ll have personal experience with.  My mother and I will however be trying it on our broken capillaries.  Stay tuned!

xx, Jenni

P.S.  I also did research on a few eye treatments boasting effectiveness on ridding your eyes of dark circles.  These are products that I’ve reviewed their ingredients and approve.  These are not products that I have personally tried.
