It’s the skincare ingredient that dermatologists rave about – and the star of our new Juicy Greens Exfoliating Toning Essence – but what makes niacinamide an essential in our skincare routines?
It promises to brighten complexions, clear pigmentation, and reduce the signs of ageing, but does niacinamide live up to the hype? We take a look into this wonder vitamin.
WHAT IS IT?
A water-soluble vitamin not derived naturally from the body, niacinamide is essentially a form of vitamin B3. By helping to build proteins in the skin, it can help stave off the effects of environmental damage (and even reduce past harm) that can lead to premature ageing, dark spots, and dehydration. Although found in foods such as like green vegetables, nuts, and legumes, it’s when it’s applied topically that it really comes into its own.
WHY SHOULD I USE IT?
Where do we start? The benefits of niacinamide are countless, regardless of your skin type or sensitivity. Thanks to its ability to retain water, it strengthens the skin’s natural barrier function, which is our first line of defence from UV rays, pollution, drying weather conditions, and environmental aggressors. By locking in water, it also boosts the ability of other moisturising ingredients, which is why it works so well in a cleanser or serum.
Boasting a myriad of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, niacinamide can also help build keratin, a protein that keeps our visage firm and healthy, and gives us that glowing, bouncy skin we all dream of. Not to mention a whole host of other skin-loving benefits, such as reducing the appearance of pores, minimising redness, reducing fine lines, and regulating sebum levels.
WHAT ABOUT PIGMENTATION?
Whether it’s a bout of wayward hormones or too much time basking in the sun, pigmentation (those brown sun spots we see on our face, décolletage or hands) can affect anyone, regardless of gender and race. Luckily, studies have shown that niacinamide can significantly decrease hyperpigmentation after just four weeks of use. This is because vitamin B3 reduces the transfer of cells that cause brown spots, called melanocytes.
GOT IT. BUT HOW DO I USE IT?
Safe and effective to use daily, niacinamide is perfectly compatible with all other ingredients, including retinol, peptides, HA, BHAs, and AHAs and other antioxidants. That’s why we made it one of the hero ingredients in our new Juicy Greens Exfoliating Toning Essence.
Inspired by the traditions of Eastern beauty – where natural, hydrating ingredients are expertly layered to help actives penetrate deep into the skin – this active essence provides gentle, daily exfoliation to maximise the absorption of any natural serums you apply afterwards. Plus, it gently removes any dirt and impurities you might miss when cleansing – it’s a skin win situation!
Clinically tested and shown to improve skin texture, tone, and evenness by an average of 68% in 28 days, just dab the dewy drops on a cotton pad after cleansing twice a day and revel in the results.
